Sport Psychology

Almost 2 years i have been living with Sport Psychology. What is actually Sport Psychology? Only a few who knows Sport Psychology. A lot of people talk about psychology when their favorite athlete knocked down to the ground. His mental is not  strong enough, no mental toughness..and bla..bla..bla..that was why he lose. These were among the common says we often heard.

So, how Sport Psychology help these athletes? As a Sport Psychology practitioner..i found it is an interesting job. Meet the athletes, observe them during training and also observe them during competition, observe their progress and listen to them when they want to talk. Sometimes you could see some athletes turn out to be a totally different person in competition. This is when they are struggling hard enough to stay confident and to stand still.

Session with athletes

Sport Psychology helps athletes by giving out some techniques to be applied. Among the techniques are :

1. Goal setting
As an athlete, they need to have their own goal. And this goal is set by them not others. Sportpsychologist and coaches, we are just giving some guidance. But, athletes themselves who set what to achieve. Goals are to be set and monitored the progression. It is not to be kept in the drawer or glued to the lockers' door or even hide under the bed. Many athletes are shy when they were asked to write their goal. You shouldn't  guys...it is something that you want, make sure you want it badly and be proud of it.Then only  you will feel  motivated to work hard to achieve it.

2. Imagery
Imagery is something that we actually does everyday. We imagine things that we like.We imagine cars that we like..imagining driving the car..enjoying driving it..what music did you play in the car..feeling proud of being in the car. The same principle goes in sport, we imagine ourselves during competition..imagining your best performance..giving all out..feel good of yourself..hears the crowds..feel your muscles and feel the satisfaction of winning. Of course imagery took times to master it but you can already start it by now.

3. Positive Self-talk
Always make a habit to say positive words to yourself. "i know i can do it", never mind i do it better next round", "focus", " i am doing good"..among the example you can use.You don't always have your coaches beside you or even your mom to motivate you. Make yourself are your own motivator.

These are among techniques in Sport Psychology. Nice of reading it but hard of applying it. It requires training like you train your sport skills. Practice makes perfect,remember..?? And never take things for granted. Who knows you miss a bus because of one cent.
